Paraplegic champ also a musician

The Herald, March 9, 1979

EEZEE does it! Here is a new group led by a singer who can’t walk, but carry a punch.

Tonight they are having their debut session at the Hatfield Junior School Hall.

Andy Scott is a paraplegic.

Andy is better known as a champ. He holds world records in paraplegic sailing.

And when he is not singing, someone a lot prettier takes over. She is Debbie Dewsbury and is engaged to a motorsport champion, Paul Tate.

The band aims to produce most of the styles in fashion, from disco to rock.

LESSONS FOR TODAY

Disability is not inability. Physically-challenged people are not always charity cases. Some have remarkable gifts that are in some instances way better than those that able-bodied people possess.

The man in the story was not only the lead singer of a band of able-bodied people, but he was also a top performer in sailing.

Physically challenged people can excel if they feel a sense of belonging and acceptance in society.

The world is littered with examples of people that have excelled despite living with disability.

Some of the famous names include Frida Kahlo, who became one of the most famous artists of all time and an icon of the twentieth century, despite spending much of her life in bed suffering from severe pain due to physical issues brought about by various challenges she faced as a child.

Another eminent person who made it despite living with a disability was Stephen Hawking, who was a theoretical physicist, astrophysicist, cosmologist and eminent scientist.

He was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, at the age of 21 and was told he had two years to live but he lived for 55 more years despite being paralysed from head to toe.

He used a voice synthesiser to communicate and a wheelchair that operated through slight movements of his head and eyes.
