THE parents of students at Kuwadzana 6 Primary School are up in arms over allegations of corruption and falling educational standards at the school.
Some teachers are being accused of prioritising students who pay extra fees, while the rest do not receive the same attention.
It is being claimed some teachers earn approximately US$1440 per month, from extra fees, before they get their salary.
The school’s headmistress, identified only as Mrs Chimwe, was recently put on suspension due to issues at the school.
It is also alleged that every Friday, each student is being asked to bring a dollar for ‘papers’ while during the weekends they conduct extra lessons for Grade 7 pupils and they are also asked to bring a dollar.
They believe that the school’s poor management and corrupt practices are depriving children of a quality education.
The parents are calling on the Ministry of Education to intervene and investigate the allegations.
Taungana Ndoro, the spokesperson at the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, said they were finalising their investigations.
A parent, who chose to remain anonymous to protect his children, told H-Metro:
“Teachers spend most of their time selling snacks and stationery instead of teaching.”
He said the pass rate at the school has dropped significantly because it didn’t have the leadership needed for teachers to focus on their core business.
Another Kuwadzana resident, who also requested anonymity, said:
“Today they did not come with their big cars because they are scared because the cars they drive do not tally with their salaries.
“Here cars like Mazda CX5 and Nissan X-Trail, the new shapes, it’s now like asina irombe.”
The Acting Headmistress, identified only as Mrs Musasiwa, said she was not allowed to conduct media interviews without the permission of her superiors at the Ministry.
