Parents of a St John’s College student who was expelled after his mobile phone was used to take “inappropriate” images by a classmate have hired lawyers to challenge the action.
The learner (14) was reportedly expelled after his classmate used the phone to take pictures while in intimate positions with his girlfriend.
The girlfriend is from another school.
The alleged misconduct led the school’s authorities to ask the boy’s parents to withdraw their child through a letter dated August 1.
Through their lawyer, Dereck Sigauke, the parents feel a disciplinary hearing should at least have been convened before a final decision was reached.
It is understood the photographs were taken on a weekend at a fast-food outlet.
The pictures went viral and were noticed by authorities at the girl’s school who then engaged St John’s College, who promptly expelled the boy.
The parents say they received a letter from one of the school administrators, Gavin Nyawata, ordering them to withdraw their child in a matter of hours.
This irked the parents who felt the decision was harsh.
As if expulsion was not enough, the parents were also given a few hours to reimburse some bursary funds.
The parents feel their son was victimized for inadvertently allowing his phone to be misused.
Gugulethu Ndlovu, who is representing the school, said the matter was sub judice.
