Parents run over son, daughter

Grace Kaerasora —
Two infants died a fortnight ago after being run over by vehicles that were being driven by their parents in separate incidents that occurred in Kwekwe and Bulawayo.

According to the police, a one-year-old girl crawled underneath her father’s vehicle at their home in Kwekwe on November 19, 2016. lt is believed the father was unaware of this.

He reversed the car, severely injuring her in the process. She died on admission to Kwekwe General Hospital. On the same day, a four-year-old boy was playing at home in Bulawayo when his mother accidently knocked him down as she pulled out of the drive-way.

He died on the spot. National police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba expressed concern over the cases.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is concerned with incidences of children being run over by cars on drive-ways inside premises, especially when reversing.

“Motorists are urged to be on the lookout for children when driving off premises. They should check underneath and around the vehicle to ensure that children or pets are not in danger of being run over.

“Parents should always monitor the movements of their children by keeping them in sight. Motorists reversing should always do so under the direction of another.”
