THE electorate should expect the 8th Parliament to be development-oriented as one party, Zanu-PF, garnered over a two-thirds majority, Clerk of Parliament Mr Austin Zvoma has said. Mr Zvoma said the composition of the 8th Parliament of Zimbabwe is different from the previous one where the two main political parties, Zanu-PF and MDC-T, had almost an equal number of legislators which made it difficult to agree on bills and other matters of policy. He said the electorate should expect productive and qualitative debate, which will largely be delivery focused.
“The 8th Parliament of Zimbabwe gives the ruling party, Zanu-PF, an opportunity to implement programmes that were enunciated in the manifesto. What we can expect is that if any motion or bill is introduced in Parliament there will not be any recrimination, hence the focus on the improvement of the lives of people,” Mr Zvoma said. The 7th Parliament can be credited for coming up with the new Constitution, though legal experts have described it as the worst ever.
Because of its nature as a hung parliament, it was difficult for the political parties involved to agree in principle on anything.
In the 7th Parliament, Zanu-PF had 99 seats, the MDC-T 100 and MDC 10 seats, while another seat was held by an independent legislator. In last week’s elections,
Zanu-PF garnered over a two-thirds majority after winning 160 seats in the National Assembly. MDC-T has 49 while the other seat was won by an independent candidate.
