The Passengers Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ) has raised alarm over the increasing cases of attacks targeting taxi drivers and called for the introduction of mandatory registration for taxi operators to enhance their safety.

PAZ national coordinator Mr Tafadzwa Goliati said Government should act swiftly to protect both passengers and transport operators, emphasising the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing the issue.

“We are deeply concerned about the rise in violent attacks on taxi drivers, especially at night,” he said.

His remarks follow a recent incident in which a taxi driver was killed by unknown assailants in Harare’s central business district.

“As we approach the festive season, we urge the Government to intensify night patrols and implement stop-and-search initiatives to curb these criminal activities,” he said.

“This should be an ongoing effort, especially during late hours when most of these attacks occur.”

The association has also advised drivers offering late-night services to remain vigilant and take extra precautions to protect themselves from potential attacks.
