The Passengers Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ) has expressed concerns about the persistent issues affecting commuters in Harare, particularly the menace of rank barons and the alarming state of commuter safety.
This comes after the recent accident at the intersection of Sam Nujoma Street and Robert Mugabe Road, which resulted in several injuries on Tuesday.
PAZ demands that authorities take decisive action against rank barons and extortionate practices, improve road safety measures to prevent accidents, and respect citizens’ rights to document incidents within reasonable boundaries.
PAZ national coordinator, Tafadzwa Goliati, said:
“We strongly condemn the extortionate practices of rank barons, who are reportedly collecting exorbitant amounts from transport operators.
“This not only increases operating costs but also perpetuates a culture of corruption, which ultimately burdens passengers.”
