ZIMBABWEAN motorists must now fork out US$92 a year for a ZBC radio licence before they can renew their ZINARA vehicle disk or get insurance.
According to a new law that President Emmerson Mnangagwa has approved, drivers will only get an exemption if they can prove their vehicles do not have radios.
The Broadcasting Services Amendment Act (No. 2 of 2025), gazetted under General Notice 1034 of 2025, now makes proof of a valid radio licence a requirement for all vehicle owners.
Clause 15 of the law slams the brakes on any licence or insurance renewal without the ZBC fee being paid or an exemption issued. Insurers are also banned from issuing cover without seeing the radio licence.
ZBC is expected to cash in big. With over 1.2 million registered vehicles and just 800 000 compliant motorists, the broadcaster stands to rake in tens of millions annually.
If a car has no radio, the driver can sign a sworn declaration and get an exemption certificate from ZBC.
No proof, no disk. No licence, no road.
