A WOMAN from Bulawayo’s Nkulumane suburb yesterday dragged her ex-husband to the Maintenance Court demanding money for her upkeep as well as that of her two orphaned grandchildren.
Violet Mutanha brought Joseph Mutanha before magistrate Marilyn Mutshina demanding $150 in maintenance per month.

Violet said Mutanha could afford to maintain her as he was realising money through pension and his house he was letting for rentals.

“He is a pensioner from the National Railways of Zimbabwe and owns a six roomed house where he is letting four rooms for $70 each, I want $150 to take care of me and my orphaned grandchildren. One is in Form One and the other in Form Four,” she said.

She said the money would help her buy farming inputs such as fertiliser so that she can farm for her grandchildren.

In response, Mutanha claimed he could not afford the money she was demanding saying he was also taking care of his two teenage children aged 14 and 15.

“I have two children with my deceased wife aged 14 and 15 that I’m taking care of. You know what happens at NRZ, we can go for over three months without being paid. I can only pay $50 because after paying water, electricity and house rates, I’ll be left with $100,” he said.

The magistrate ordered Mutanha to pay $120 with effect from this month.
