SCORES of Kezi villagers joined Government officials and the Matobo Rural District Council, vendors and school children to take part in one of the big August National Clean-Up Campaigns in Matobo District on Friday.
The monthly national clean-up campaign, launched by President Mnangagwa in December 2018, seeks to promote environmental sustainability, improve public health and encourage communities to take collective responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean.
Guest of honour at the clean-up campaign, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Lands and Rural Development, Professor Prosper Matondi, called on Kezi villagers and the business community to take ownership of keeping their environment clean.
“It’s important for the people of Kezi to waste recycling instead of burning the waste as part of Government efforts to keep our environment clean. Recycled materials are useful to companies and generate money for villagers,” he said.
“It’s our responsibility to keep the environment clean and at the same time create job opportunities that lie in the recycling sector. As a ministry our motto is: ‘our land, our prosperity, our homes, our shelter, our health and our livelihood’ so keeping our environment clean is an important aspect of that motto,” said Prof Matondi.
He said his ministry endeavors for the development of rural business centres such as Kezi into hubs of economic activity.
“The continued growth of Kezi Business Centre means the lives of the people of this area will improve,” he said.
Speaking during the campaign, Chief Nyangazonke commended the huge turnout and urged villagers to keep the environment clean.
“The presence of senior Government officials in Kezi to support the clean-up campaign is a testament that this is indeed an important occasion that we must all embrace to keep our environment clean. Today we’re united as a nation in preaching the gospel of cleanliness,” he said.
