Peterhouse end Falcon’s unbeaten run

FALCON College’s Mad Dogs fell 33-37 to Peterhouse’s Kings in a schools’ rugby league game played in Marondera on Saturday. The defeat ended Falcon’s hopes of finishing the season unbeaten and was also sweet revenge for Peterhouse, who lost the reverse encounter in Esigodini.

Peterhouse coach David Kirkman was over the moon with the victory saying it felt good to beat a side that had virtually rolled over their opponents in previous matches.

“We really had a good game. We enjoyed the challenge our opponents put up and managed to end the first half leading 17-7,” said Kirkman.

Falcon tried to fight back in the second half, but Peterhouse stretched their lead to 28-17 with 18 minutes of play left.

The visitors mounted an onslaught towards the end of the match, but Peterhouse scored nine more points and held on to win the tightly contested match by four points.

Falcon coach Brandon French blamed his team’s loss on their failure to utilise scoring opportunities they had.

“We lost many chances and failed to sustain momentum for the rest of the match, but managed to recover and put up a good fight,” said French.

Falcon’s final game of the season is against St John’s College of Harare in Esigodini this Saturday and French said they wanted to finish on a high.

“We’re looking forward to our next game and are preparing for it as we’ve always done. We never underrate our opponents since nothing is predictable in rugby.

“We’re hoping for a good game and a win,” said French.
