Petrol Bomb: MDC supporters in court

Fungai Jachi Court Reporter
THREE suspected MDC-T supporters appeared in court yesterday charged with petrol-bombing the house of zanu-pf Harare Provincial Youth League chairperson Cde Godwin Gomwe in Budiriro last month.Tendai Muchekahanzu (38), Stephen Dalaina (26) and Victor Munhuwani (36) appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe facing charges of malicious damage to property.

The trio was remanded to today for bail ruling.

Prosecutor Ms Sharon Mashavira opposed bail, saying the charges were serious.

“There is overwhelming evidence against the accused persons and they are a flight risk as they are fully aware that they are likely to be incarcerated upon conviction,” she said.

The trio’s lawyer Mr Gift Mtisi said the state had no evidence against his clients.

“Muchekahanzu and Dalaina were in Masvingo and Munhuwani was in Norton on the day in question, so to say that there are eye witnesses who can identify the three as the perpetrators is far- fetched,” he said.

Mr Mtisi said the state’s case was weak.

The prosecution alleges that on April 25 the trio and others still at large went to Cde Gomwe’s house in Budiriro 5B in the early hours of the morning. They allegedly threw petrol bombs at Cde Gomwe’s house but they did not explode. They then threw stones damaging four windowpanes and denting a door on the garage. Cde Gomwe’s neighbours allegedly witnessed the incident.
