Pirate taxi driver knocks down woman in Bulawayo city centre while fleeing police

A PIRATE taxi driver knocked down a woman in Bulawayo’s Central Business District before crashing into a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction while attempting to escape from police officers.

The incident occurred on Tuesday just before 12pm along Jason Moyo Street, between Leopold Takawira Avenue and 8th Avenue. The woman sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a local hospital by a city ambulance.

Witnesses reported that after knocking down the woman, the driver did not stop and instead tried to flee from the police. This led to him colliding with a Mercedes-Benz travelling in the opposite lane. Both vehicles were damaged, although no one else was injured in the crash.

Residents have expressed concern over the frequent cat-and-mouse chases between police and pirate taxi drivers, which have resulted in several injuries in the city centre.
