DESPERATION can drive people to extremes.
More often than not, it results in either undesirable outcomes or embarrassment.
The opposition has become irrelevant and, as a result, has turned to desperate actions to gain attention and salvage its waning political fortunes and appeal. The Second Republic has made ZANU PF a dominant force once more.
The revolutionary party has been able to attract people from all walks of life, including some former high-ranking opposition officials. It is also now dominating in constituencies that were previously held by the opposition.
And this has made the opposition desperate. Their next planned move is to target the upcoming SADC Heads of State and Government Summit scheduled for next month. It has become clear that there are some elements that are working tirelessly behind the scenes to try to spoil the regional meeting, during which President Mnangagwa will assume the SADC chairmanship.
Their chances of success, however, are next to nothing, not least because the opposition is now heavily fragmented.
A tranquil environment is all but guaranteed for the summit.
Disappointment and failure await those who are under the illusion that last year’s elections, in which the colossal ZANU PF emerged victorious, will be a topic for discussion. SADC leaders, who are obviously aware of the opposition’s shenanigans, will not have time to waste on irrelevant issues.
One thing is certain — Zimbabwe’s elections will not be on the agenda.
That ship has sailed.
It is almost one year since last year’s elections and the ZANU PF Government has made tremendous gains since being re-elected.
We will continue doing so until the next election, where our works and achievements will once again serve as our manifesto. Again, this will be key to our victory.
Our people will always choose their beloved party because it delivers.
So, conjuring up protests over some illusory crisis in Zimbabwe just shows how the opposition does not have an iota of nationalism in its DNA.
Its sole mission is to discredit the Government and try by all means to disrupt our developmental trajectory.
As they scheme, they are exposing themselves as architects of Zimbabwe’s economic challenges. The tragedy we have suffered over the past two decades can be attributed to the lack of a patriotic opposition.
Over the past two decades, the opposition has been well-known for relying on dirty tricks to soil Zimbabwe’s image whenever the world’s eyes are focused on the country. This is a method they have deployed countless times before and it seems it may not be any different come August. Let the evident failures by the opposition over the past decades serve as a reminder that there can be no benefit derived from unpatriotic behaviour.
As we continue with preparations for the SADC summit, let us all enjoy and marvel at the great works that have been achieved by the ZANU PF-led Government, under President Mnangagwa.
