AN 87-YEAR-OLD man from Lobengula suburb in Bulawayo yesterday pleaded with a magistrate to jail his 24-year-old grandson who stole about $240 from his bank account to impress his girlfriend.

The court heard that Trust Mbanje used his grandfather‘s ATM card to withdraw money 13 times to buy groceries for his girlfriend.

The old man, Jonathan Mbanje, told provincial magistrate Abednico Ndebele that he should jail his ungrateful grandson.

“Please jail him so he can learn some manners. He has to learn to be a responsible man.

“He can’t make stealing from an elderly person like me a habit. I never want to see him again at my house,” said Mbanje.

Trust said he stole from his grandfather to buy his girlfriend some groceries.

“I stole from my grandfather to buy my girlfriend, Brenda, some groceries. I’m not employed. I had access to my grandfather’s bank account because we opened the bank account together. So I had the access pin,” he said.

Trust pleaded guilty to 13 counts of theft and Magistrate Ndebele sentenced him to 52 days imprisonment.

Prosecuting, Tendai Binha told the court that between February 24 to March 17, Trust stole money from Mbanje using his ATM card at Choppies Lobengula.

The prosecutor said Mbanje discovered the theft on March 23.
