PLUMTREE residents owe council $1,2 million in unpaid rates, the acting town secretary, Elvis Maphosa has said. Maphosa said the local authority was as a result struggling to provide services. “We are owed $1,2 million by residents, government departments and the business community,” he said.
Maphosa said because of cash-flow challenges, council was finding it difficult to provide adequate services to its residents.
“The money we collect a month is way below our requirements and as such we cannot meet our financial obligations,” said Maphosa.
He said the council has been forced to shelve a number of capital projects because it had no money.
“Residents continue to demand effective service delivery but are not paying for the services.
“They expect council to provide treated water but they are not paying for the water. Our service providers such as Zinwa are now threatening to cut supplies,” said Maphosa.
