PROSPECT Lithium Zimbabwe (PLZ) on Monday joined other Zimbabweans and Africa as a whole in commemorating Africa Day.

PLZ is owned by Huayou Cobalt, a Chinese-owned company. Huayou Cobalt also owns Acardia Technology Zimbabwe, which specialises in processing lithium concentrate into lithium sulphate.

The two companies, PLZ and ATZ, operate in Goromonzi district in the Mashonaland East province.

As a way of commemorating Africa Day, PLZ organised a series of events in Goromonzi, which included sports and traditional cookout competitions where the community participated and won several prizes in return.

For PLZ, this is their third Africa Day celebration, with the organisation saying the event will be done annually.

PLZ public relations manager Mrs Patience Chizodza said they value this day, when African leaders formed the Organisation of African Unity, and they will celebrate it annually with the Goromonzi community.

“We are operating in Goromonzi district, and we want to keep our relations here cordial with the community,” she said.

“We want to ensure that our integration as a Chinese entity is indeed accepted by the people of Goromonzi.

“So we have been celebrating Africa Day for the past three years, where we commemorate the birth of the Organisation of African Unity.

“The community is now looking forward to this event every year. We do a lot of activities on this day, we do traditional dance, music, sports, as well as exhibiting African and Chinese cuisine and artefacts. This has now become part of the Goromonzi community activities every year.”
