“We were informed that she was no longer coming,” he said from his base in South Africa.
Mr Hove refused to entertain further questions, saying he was not allowed to divulge travelling itineraries of Government officials.
PM Tsvangirai’s spokesperson Mr Luke Tamborinyoka yesterday did not give an answer as to why Ms Macheka suddenly cancelled her trip.
“The Indian trip is a creation of The Herald,” he said. “The Herald appears to know more about the Prime Minister than our office, so we stand to be guided by The Herald.”
Mr Tamborinyoka said The Herald was supposed to check its facts properly before publishing the story.
Ms Macheka was supposed to return from her week-long trip on July 12.
It was not clear by yesterday if Ms Macheka still wanted to undertake the trip.
On her return, Ms Macheka was expected to leave for another international trip to Japan and Australia with her husband and his daughter Rumbidzai.
According to the application for a Cabinet Authority made by the PM’s Office under the recommendation of PM’s secretary, Mr Ian Makone, the cost for Ms Macheka’s trip was supposed to be met by the Government.
The application claimed Ms Macheka was travelling on the PM’s duties. This is despite the fact that the PM’s official duties are carried out by civil servants.
PM Tsvangirai customarily married Ms Macheka recently after a flirtation with several women, one of whom he is paying maintenance for a child he sired.
Mr Tsvangirai left the country shocked after marrying one Lorcadia Karimatsenga Tembo in a customary union that culminated in a divorce after a mere 12 days.
