Poet hails liberators

Gumbochuma is undergoing rehabilitation at Jairos Jiri Centre in Nguboyenja after an accident last year which led to the amputation of his right arm.

Gumbochuma said that he tries to show the beauty of the country through his poems, while at the same time showing the importance of land to the nation’s well being.

“I try to show people how beautiful our country is and also some of my poems are about land, which is our most precious resource,” said Gumbochuma.

He said some of his poems highlighted the important role played by the country’s heroes on the road to liberation from white colonial rule.

“In some of my poems I try to show people that we must be appreciative of the role that was played by the gallant sons and daughters of this country. I believe they sacrificed a lot to see us free,” said Gumbochuma.

Gumbochuma said he was inspired to work on poetry after he heard President Mugabe speaking on a local radio station about the need for the youth to show dedication to the nation.

“After I heard the President speaking that day on the need for the nation’s youth to do something for the country, I was inspired to work on this anthology,” he said.

Gumbochuma said poetry was like a calling to him and he was not inspired by a particular poet to work on his anthology, which is yet to be titled.
