A MAJOR police operation in Harare yesterday led to the seizure of at least two tonnes of dagga concealed in a truck that had allegedly entered Zimbabwe from South Africa, resulting in the arrest of the vehicle’s driver.
The dramatic bust unfolded at a truck stop in Southerton, Harare, after the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) received intelligence indicating that a 30-tonne haulage truck carrying a massive consignment of the illicit drug had crossed into the country.
Acting swiftly on the tip-off, detectives tracked the vehicle and intercepted it at the busy truck stop yesterday morning.
Sources said police officers questioned the driver upon stopping the vehicle, but he allegedly failed to provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the suspected contraband.
A thorough search of the truck reportedly uncovered at least two tonnes of dagga, cleverly concealed inside the vehicle, in what is believed to be one of the biggest drug seizures recorded in the country in recent months.
The driver, Mr Tapson Ndou (58), was immediately arrested and taken into custody.
Investigations are now underway to establish the origin of the consignment, its intended destination, and whether other suspects may have been involved in the operation.
The seizure comes as authorities continue to intensify the fight against drug trafficking and substance abuse, which has emerged as a major concern across the country.
Efforts to obtain comment from ZRP national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi were unsuccessful, as he was attending a conference in Bulawayo. Mr Ndou is expected to appear in court soon, facing charges related to the alleged possession and transportation of dangerous drugs.
