A 39-year-old police officer from Jambezi Police Station in Victoria Falls has been arraigned before the courts on allegations of raping a 13-year-old girl.

The officer appeared before the Victoria Falls Magistrates Court facing allegations stemming from an incident that occurred on 8 January 2025.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority, the officer confronted the girl and her cousin, who were waiting for their sister.

He quizzed them about their late-night outing before forcibly leading the complainant behind a nearby shop, where he allegedly fondled, kissed and raped her once.

After the assault, the officer reportedly warned the victim against speaking out about the incident. To silence her, he purchased two soft drinks, two packets of biscuits and a bottle of opaque beer, which he gave to the minor.

Despite the threats, the victim confided in her cousin, who subsequently reported the incident to the police, resulting in the officer’s arrest. The accused has been remanded in custody until 7 February 2025.
