ASSAULTING a male reveller over a bar-lady landed a Chipinge police officer in trouble after he was hauled before the courts to answer assault charges. Admire Mbizo (22), a police officer stationed at Chipinge Transtech allegedly assaulted Norman Mutikiti with open hands and an empty beer bottle, accusing him of trying to snatch his girlfriend.
Chipinge magistrate, Mr Makamera Waini, had not sentenced Mbizo at the time of going to Press on Wednesday.
Mbizo had pleaded guilty to the offence.
The State led by Mr Witness Nyamundaya said on November 2 at around 10pm, the complainant, Norman Mutikiti (22) was playing snooker at Matyezuva Night Club in Gaza high-density suburb when he was assaulted by Mbizo.
“The complainant was asked by a certain lady only known as Lizzy to call the bar- lady for her.
“The accused person was inside the bar drinking beer when the complainant went to convey the message he was given to the bar lady.
“Mbizo then interrogated the complainant why he was talking to his girlfriend.
“After quarrelling for some time, they both went outside where the complainant directed the bar-lady to the person who was calling her.
“This did not go down well with Mbizo who assaulted Mutikiti. He further hit Mutikiti with an empty beer bottle on the left cheek. Mutikiti sustained a deep cut and was rushed to Chipinge District Hospital for treatment.
“He then reported the matter to Chipinge Central Police Station leading to Mbizo’s arrest,” he said.
Asked why a law enforcement agent had decided to take the law into his own hands to assault the complainant with an empty bottle, Mbizo said he was drunk and pleaded with the court to give him a second chance.
“I committed this offence while drunk and I was not intending to harm the complainant, but just to stop him from snatching my girlfriend.
“Your Worship, I am a family man with only two years in service, so have mercy on me,” he said.
