Police sources yesterday said the pair was likely to be charged with criminal defamation after they allegedly wrote that Local Government Minister Ignatius Chombo bragged about his wealth to representatives of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Deputy national police spokesperson Chief Supt Oliver Mandipaka, yesterday confirmed that police had picked up the pair.
“Police just picked up the two for an interview. They are still verifying certain issues in connection with an article that came out in their paper,” he said.
Gates, the former chairman of Microsoft Company and founder of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation are funding the construction of houses for poor city residents in Dzivaresekwa suburb.
The Gates Foundation, the largest private foundation globally, is also financing the refurbishment of Mbare Hostels. The duo’s lawyer, Mr Alec Muchadehama of Mbidzo, Muchadehama, Makoni and
Partners, confirmed last night that his clients were picked for questioning but were later released after statements were recorded from them.
“They (Gama and Ncube) were released at 5:30pm after warned and cautioned statements were recorded from them on criminal defamation charges. They were released pending further investigations,” said Mr Muchadehama.
