Police release names of Masvingo, Rusape accident victims

Police have released the names of six of the seven people who were killed when 11 others were injured in road traffic accidents that were recorded in Masvingo and Rusape over the weekend.

In one of the accidents on September 14, a Nissan Serena with eight passengers on board veered off the road and overturned before landing on its side after its rear right tyre burst at the 60-kilometre peg along Roy-Chiredzi Road.

Four people were killed while four others were injured. The bodies of the victims were taken to Msiso Hospital mortuary for post mortem while the injured were admitted at the same hospital.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said, “Reference is made to the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s press statement on two fatal road traffic accidents that occurred in Masvingo and Rusape on September 14.

“The four victims that were killed in the Masvingo accident have been identified as Siyano Nyamande (40) of Crownhill, Borrowdale; Priscilla Musembwa (64) of Cranborne, Harare; Memory Kwenda (40) of Dzivarasekwa, Harare and Epson Nyamande (45) of Borrowdale, Harare.”

In another fatal road traffic accident that occurred at the 60-kilometre peg along the Harare-Mutare Road, three people were killed while seven others were injured when a Toyota Hilux with two passengers on board was involved in a head-on collision with another Toyota Hilux with eight passengers on board.

The bodies of the victims were taken to Rusape General Hospital for post-mortem while the injured were admitted at the same hospital.

The three victims were identified by the next of kin as Chigweshe Tendai Amon (52) of Neshena Village, Makoni, Madekufamba Viginia of Mundopa Village, Makoni and Clement Kadungure (53) of Kamba Village, Makoni.

Meanwhile, police have confirmed a road traffic accident in which 18 people were injured when a CAG bus veered off the road, overturned and landed on its right side at the 193-kilometre peg along the Harare-Chirundu Road on Tuesday at around 8.20 am.

The injured were admitted at Karol District Hospital.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that drivers should observe all road rules and regulations and exercise extreme caution on the country’s roads to safeguard human lives,” Commissioner Nyathi said.
