Police to launch ‘Mhosva Hairovi’

unlicensed commuter omnibus drivers have been arrested under the ongoing operation “Mapepa Akakwana”.
National Traffic police spokesperson Inspector Tigere Chigome yesterday said the new operation code-named “Mhosva Hairovi” begins tomorrow until July 7.

“We are targeting those motorists who are on our wanted lists for violating various traffic regulations and have failed to pay fines or appear in court,” he said.
None of the 5 000 motorists on the wanted list has reported to the police.
He appealed to the wanted motorists to come forward and clear their cases before tomorrow.

“Those who fail would be arrested and detained before appearing in court,” he said.
According to police statistics, the motorists were issued with tickets between 2009 and last year.
The motorists – who were all issued with warrants of arrest after they failed to appear in court – face charges ranging from driving without due care, failure to report an accident, failure to stop after an accident, driving

without current disk, possession of fake driver’s licence, negligent driving and culpable homicide among others.
Also on the list are kombi drivers who were found without route authority, insecure load, without road service permit, no certificate of fitness, operating against time table, overloading among others.
The month-long “Mapepa Akakwana” operation, which began on June 1, has seen 948 unlicensed commuter omnibus drivers and 992 operators being arres- ted.

Insp Chigome said since the beginning of the operation they impounded 1721 commuter omnibuses.
“We have also arrested 2 939 for driving with no medical endorsements, 3 129 without going for retest, 2 134 without defensive drivers’ licences and 1254 for driving below the age of 25,” he said.

He urged the public to co-operate with the police during this period.
Meanwhile, 240 police officers left Harare yesterday for an educational tour at the war shrines in Mozambi que.

The group will visit Chimoio, Tembwe and Nyadzo- nia.
