THE restructuring of the Zanu-PF Bulawayo Province is ongoing with the Politburo set to finalise and proffer a way forward on the executive elections that were held in May.

The election came about after President Mnangagwa, who is also the party’s First Secretary, dissolved both Harare and Bulawayo provincial structures in March this year. In an interview, Zanu-PF Secretary for Administration Cde Obert Mpofu said strides had been made in the process.

“They have made progress in the restructuring exercise in Bulawayo, what remains are the final stages of that process which will be determined by the Politburo. This stage will entail the election of the provincial executive and that process has to be guided and directed by the Politburo which set up the restructuring committee in the first place,” he said.

Zanu-PF director in the Commissariat Retired Colonel George Nare raised concern before the May elections in Bulawayo after it was realised that the calibre of party members that were being nominated into leadership positions was below the party’s expectations and standards. Rtd Col Nare said as the elections progressed they realised that the calibre of candidates who were being elected to occupy critical provincial posts left a lot to be desired.

He said people with criminal records were finding their way into the provincial leadership yet the party requires disciplined people with sound education and experience. Rtd Col Nare said the party also discovered that some people were not registered voters. Another official within the party said they had come up with added regulations and criteria to be used for one to contest in a provincial post.

“One track record is that one has to be a party cadre or a minimum of five years, must have no criminal record and that certain positions will have to be preserved for war veterans. These are part of the new rules so that provincial elections are held. This is to ensure that provincial elections are held without confusion or breach of the rules. The Politburo will adopt them and as soon as they are done we can use those regulations for elections in both Harare and Bulawayo provinces,” he said.

The source said the added regulations will see a standardised manner of holding elections in the party for all provinces.
