ST MATHIAS Tsonzo High literally dominated the inaugural edition of the National Anglican Schools Association (ASA) Games which the school hosted last weekend.The school upstaged St Augustine’s Mission 2-0 in the soccer finals.
St Mathias’ two goals came from strikers, Anelka Chiwandire and Fortune Mvududu who were exciting all day. St Columbus from Bulawayo came third, while Daramombe from Chivhu and St Patrick’s from Gweru were on fourth and fifth positions respectively.
In other games, St Mathias Tsonzo High School emerged overall winners in the girls’ soccer, while St Columbus were runners-up.
In tennis, Daramombe emerged tops in the boys singles, while St Mary’s Magdalene were second placed.
St Augustine’s were crowned number one in netball, while St David’s Bonda were the runners-up.
In handball, Matabeleland Select ruled the roost, while St David’s Bonda weighed in second position.
St Mary’s Magdalene were the boys’ handball champions after outplaying second-placed Matabeleland Select in the finals.
Gweru’s St Patrick’s dominated play in basketball competition where they snatched pole position in the boys’ category, while St Faith’s came second.
St Augustine’s were the girls’ basketball champions where hosts St Mathias Tsonzo came second.
In volleyball, St Faith’s were the boys’ category winners and Daramombe were the bridesmaid, while St David’s Bonda turned on the heat in the girls’ category.
St Mary’s Magdalene came second in the girls’ volleyball category.
In his prize presentation speech, ASA head-in-charge, James Mwonzora, said he was impressed by the level of competitiveness witnessed during the games.
He expressed hope that future events would be bigger and better.
“I am very delighted to have hosted the first edition of the games in our diocese. They were very entertaining and drew a large crowd. We hope the games will keep the momentum going into the future,” he said.
