THE popularity of the game of pool countrywide is also being felt in largely remote areas such as Ward Eight of Chimanimani district where trendy hangout, Humbic night club popularly known as ‘PaHarare’ has become the home of local pool tournaments over the recent months.
PaHarare night club located at Rufaro Business centre in Nyanyadzi last weekend hosted a tournament that accommodated male and female players from Downtown, Uptown, Rufaro/PaHarare, Gwitira and Goney pool clubs.
The tournament started at 3pm and ended at 7pm. It was used to select players who would compete against teams from Chipinge, Nhedziwa, Tongogara and Birchnough Bridge in the next few weeks.
The tournament was sponsored by the local business community, though members from each team contributed towards the prizes that winners walked away with to their respective places.
Uptown pool club defied the odds, followed by Gwitira, Rufaro and Downtown, respectively. Players only identified as Nkomo, Chiodza, Star, Chimutopo, Kamusikiri, Zingo were among the selected best players. They walked away with T-shirts and cash.
PaHarare club spokesperson, Tawanda Nkomo said besides having fun, the main aim of the tournament was to figure out talents among local players.
“There are many talented people in our area but they lack exposure to some of these things. The reason why we have taken up pool seriously is to prepare a creamy team and play against teams from all over the province and change the livelihoods of many, in the name of sport. It wasn’t just for fun and it accommodated all age groups so that we form one strong Nyanyadzi team,” said Nkomo.
He added that preparations to compete with teams at the provincial level are underway as the clubs are sourcing more funds.
“Representatives from the five clubs are sourcing funds in preparation of games against teams from all over the province and as a team we believe we can go to the extremes. In that case, I would like to thank the local business community that has been with us over the recent weeks that we have held our games. Now we can feel that we are fully geared to go beyond ward Eight and face other giants,” he said.
