The Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) over the weekend donated an assortment of goods to the Mutemwa Leprosy Centre in Mutoko.
The goods, worth over $10 000, were handed over to the centre which cares for 38 patients, 22 of them post-lepers (those who were attacked by leprosy and treated successfully, but need constant monitoring).
In a speech read on his behalf by POTRAZ public affairs manager Mrs Sibo Muteyiwa, director-general Mr Gift Muchengete said: “I want to commend authorities here for allowing us to visit and donate these goods to this home today,” he said. “This gesture is one of our initiatives to give back to the community.
Father Alfred Tigere, who runs the centre, commended POTRAZ for the donation, saying it was such gestures of love which restored confidence in people suffering and who had been affected by leprosy.
“Most of our patients here have lost confidence due to stigmatisation by the society, but gestures like these from POTRAZ restore confidence in them,” he said.
“What POTRAZ has done is commendable, it shows love, we usually face challenges of basics, but with organisations like POTRAZ extending a helping hand like this, we know we are safe.”
Father Tigere said this year’s Christmas Day would be a memorable one as there would be enough food to ensure everyone at the home celebrates on a full stomach.
