THE Postal and Telecommunication Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) yesterday donated 15 special wheelchairs worth US$10 000 for paediatric and cerebral palsy children from St Giles Rehabilitation Centre Management which were sourced from the Director General’s Annual Charity Golf Day.
Speaking during the handover ceremony held at their offices in Harare, Potraz Director General Dr Gift Machengete said they have donated the wheelchairs through their utmost benevolence and thrust of having an inclusive society and to achieve social justice.
“Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.” as he quoted the wise words of Muhammad Ali.
He officially handed over ten paediatric wheelchairs for children with cerebral palsy and five standard wheelchairs to St Giles Rehabilitation Centre – a beacon of hope and healing for countless Zimbabweans living with disabilities.
The wheelchairs were procured through proceeds from the POTRAZ Charity Golf Tournament, an annual event that blends sport, fellowship, and purpose.
“While the tournament provides an opportunity for networking and recreation, its deeper meaning lies in our collective effort to make a difference — to channel our resources toward uplifting the vulnerable and transforming lives through acts of compassion,” said Dr Machengete.
He thanked the corporate partners and individuals who participated in and supported the Charity Golf Tournament.
“Your generosity and partnership continue to demonstrate the power of unity and shared responsibility in driving social progress,” he said.
He said, by handing over these fifteen wheelchairs, they are not simply donating assistive devices; but they are restoring mobility, independence, and dignity.
“For some, these wheelchairs will mean the ability to attend school. For others, they will provide easier access to therapy, healthcare, and social activities. Above all, they symbolize hope — the hope for a more inclusive society where every individual can move, participate, and thrive without limitation,” he said.
Dr Machengete went of to quote the wise words from the late, Nelson Mandela – “Supporting people with disabilities is not an act of benevolence, but a recognition of their inherent rights and human dignity.”
He said, POTRAZ remains committed to contributing to this just cause and we applauded St Giles Rehabilitation Centre for its dedication to rehabilitation and empowerment and giving hope and restoring independence to children with disabilities.
Other partners who chipped in with support included Econet Wireless, NetOne, TelOne, Liquid, Zimpapers, Powertel, Zimbabwe Tourism Authority, Aura Group, University of Zimbabwe, CEO Roundtabe and many others.
