MIKE Ndlovu recalls how difficult the situation was when a relative passed on late year at Binga District Hospital.
“It was a terrible moment. We bought our own ice blocks to put on the body. The mortuary issue is about the malfunction of the storage facility, coupled with electricity blackouts and lack of a backup plan. It is a sad situation having our only district hospital operating without a cold storage for bodies at the mortuary for the past seven months,” Ndlovu said.
Binga North legislator Prince Sibanda confirmed that the hospital was having power challenges that have affected the mortuary.
Monitor Munsaka, a businesswoman, said she has been counting losses in the fish business because of the blackouts.
“I have lost more than 100kg of fish this week when we stayed for three days without electricity. Nowadays the fishing season is picking up, but power is letting us down,” she said.
Samson Sibanda, the chairperson of the Binga District Residents Association, added that power shortages were affecting business and general livelihoods.
However, Government has initiated a number of programmes set to improve livelihoods in Binga, and also create employment. –Citizen Bulletin.
