President Mnangagwa’s Precabe Farm on the outskirts of Kwekwe will next month host a National Field Day after the Department of Agriculture, Technical and Extension Services (Agritex) in conjunction with Seed Co, identified the farm as one of the best in terms of crop production this year.

The President has a thriving maize crop on 400 hectares and another 200 hectares under soya beans.

The President has a 405-hectare farm, but is renting land from neighbouring farms.

Midlands provincial crop and livestock officer, Mrs Madelina Magwenzi, said the department and Seed Co have started preparatory meetings for the event dubbed “The Grand Filed Day”, which is set for March 12.

“Precabe Farm was identified to host this year’s Grand Field Day after assessments that were done found that there was massive land utilisation at the farm and would be an inspiration to many farmers who would be part of the event,” she said.

“It will be good for farmers from across the country to converge at the farm and bear witness to what the President is doing at his farm despite his busy schedule.”

Precabe Farm manager, Mr Patrick Mnangagwa, said they were humbled by the decision to have the field day at the farm.

“We were only identified as the model farm to hold such an event, but they are organising everything, including the logistics,” he said.

Mr Mnangagwa said they were expecting between 12 and 15 tonnes of maize per hectare.

A passionate farmer himself, President Mnangagwa often goes to his Precabe Farm at the slightest opportune time to see the progress, despite a packed schedule as the Head of State.

The President, who has a hands-on approach to farming, spent his entire vacation at his farm recently, where he attracted several visitors who would not leave without the President taking them on a tour of the farm.

The Head of State and Government also hosted members of the Political Actors Dialogue, a grouping of political parties, which participated in the 2018 harmonised elections, as part of Unity Day celebrations in December last year.
