Helcraw Water, in partnership with the City of Harare, is now installing prepaid water meters in Mainway Meadows.
Ward 23 Hatfield Councillor, Stanley Manyenga, said the crew moved to Mainway Meadows after completing installation in Houghton Park last week.
“This week they are in Mainway Meadows,” he said.
Cllr Manyenga said there is generally good feedback from residents.
“Of course, there are some complaints, but I think residents are quite happy because they believe that with the installation of these meters, it will be easier for them to have water and to be able to pay for what they would have used,” he said.
“Because some time ago, they used to think estimates were a challenge because they were wondering whether they were paying for what they were actually consuming.
“Like now they are sure that every 10 000 litres is equivalent to US$2,10, so you can easily measure the amount of water that you are using with those meters.
“So I think there is quite a good response from the residents because probably those were the questions that they were asking about the meters.”
Cllr Manyenga said after Mainway Meadows, the programme is expected to move to Derbyshire and Uplands and to other suburbs in Waterfalls.
“The target is to complete installations across the whole of Waterfalls, which is ward 23,” he said.
Cllr Manyenga said the pipe replacement programme has also started in his ward.
“The programme is ongoing, although it is moving at a slow pace. The pipe replacement started from the other side of Waterfalls, coming from Amalinda, where the Trabablas Interchange is,” he said.
“There will definitely be an improvement in water supply due to the new PVC pipes as the old steel pipes were prone to rust, which at times clogged the pipes and affected the flow of water. “There won’t be any such issues with the new pipes. And if there is a leak, it can be easily detected.”
He said the Waterfalls district office is open to receive enquiries from residents and to register the meters.”
