LOCAL Government, Public Works and National Housing Minister Saviour Kasukuwere yesterday said preparations for the 36th Independence Day celebrations were at an advanced stage, with some of the logistics in place and urged people to come in large numbers for this important day.

Zimbabwe celebrates its 36th Independence anniversary on April 18.

In an interview after touring the National Sports Stadium yesterday, Minister Kasukuwere called on Zimbabweans from all walks of life to converge at the NSS on Independence Day.

“We’re happy with the facilities that are now in place, and we’ve inspected the stadium. It’s in good condition because we’re expecting a huge number of people coming for the celebrations,” he said.

He urged people to come early before President Robert Mugabe arrives to address the nation.

He said gates would be opened as early as 5AM.

“This is an important day on our calendar, and we would like to urge every Zimbabwean and all stakeholders to come in numbers and celebrate this day on April 18,” Minister Kasukuwere said.

He said transport logistics were still being arranged but buses would be available to ferry people to and from the stadium.

The minister was accompanied by Sport and Recreation Minister Makhosini Hlongwane and senior government officials.
