President Mnangagwa has given the green light for the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) to assess Zimbabwe in August.

The APRM, established in 2003 as an African Union (AU) voluntary governance self-assessment tool, promotes good governance, accountability, democracy, human rights, and sustainable development through periodic reviews by fellow African states.

Speaking after meeting President Mnangagwa at State House this morning, APRM chief executive, Ambassador Marie Antoinette Rose-Quatre said they will be meeting with various communities, sectors of Government, and civil society organisations.

“The President has agreed. He said the country is ready, and we are very excited because the APRM is an African Union organ, so we are here as Africans supporting an African member state,” she said.

“This is very important because when we do the review missions, we are answering this big question about African solutions to African problems. So this is why we are here. We are very excited and look forward to engaging with not only the Government but all the other stakeholders.”

To date, 44 AU member states have joined the APRM, committing to undergo self-assessments and peer reviews in governance.
