PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa, accompanied by Vice President General (Retired) Constantino Chiwenga, has officially marked the start of construction for the new 720MW thermal power plant and 200MW solar project in Hwange.
Following a briefing, the President proceeded to unveil a plaque that signifies the ground-breaking of the landmark initiative.
With a ceremonial pick, President Mnangagwa dug into the soil three times before using a shovel to scoop away earth, symbolising the commencement of the project.
He unveiled the plaque, with Matabeleland North Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Richard Moyo reading the inscription to the gathered audience.
As the delegation moved to the VIP tent, President Mnangagwa showcased his trademark dance, energising the crowd and fostering a spirit of celebration among attendees.
The official proceedings commenced with the national anthem, performed by the Police Band, setting a patriotic tone for the event. Traditional leaders, including Chief Wange of the project area, Acting Chief Mvuthu, Acting Chief Shana, and Acting Chief Mabhikwa from Lupane, were present as part of the programme, highlighting the community’s involvement in this significant development.
This project, spearheaded by Titan New Energy in partnership with Zesa Holdings, represents a vital investment of approximately US$1 billion.
It is expected to alleviate Zimbabwe’s energy shortages, create jobs, and contribute to the country’s economic growth while promoting environmental sustainability through innovative energy solutions. With a completion target set for the end of 2028, the initiative underscores the Government’s commitment to enhancing the nation’s energy infrastructure and fostering sustainable development.
