ZESA Holdings Executive Chairman Dr Sydney Gata took to the podium at the ground-breaking ceremony for the 720MW thermal power plant and 200MW solar project, boldly stating that the event signifies the end of Zimbabwe’s blackout era.
“I am tired of being insulted for the energy crisis,” he declared, emphasising the project’s importance in addressing the nation’s long-standing power shortages.
Dr Gata said the initiative is one of 18 projects designed to collectively add over 4 000 MW to the national grid, noting that Zimbabwe is currently short of only 600 MW. “In two years, we will have surplus energy,” he promised, asserting that the project aligns with the total electrification goals for the country.

In a commitment to inclusivity, he announced plans to roll out an off-grid solar project starting next year, saying: “We aim to leave no one and no place behind.”
The initiative reflects the Government’s dedication to ensuring that all communities have access to reliable electricity.
Mr Zhou Ding from China, representing the project’s financial backing, confirmed an investment of US$1 billion, with completion slated for the end of 2028.
He expressed ambition for the project to become a flagship energy solution in Africa, focused on developing reliable power sources.
Dr Gata also spoke to the broader societal impact of the project: “Upon completion, we will work actively to improve the education of children,” highlighting the interconnectedness of energy availability and educational opportunities.
The ground-breaking ceremony marks a significant step towards revitalising Zimbabwe’s energy sector, aiming to enhance economic growth, improve living standards, and pave the way for a brighter future for all Zimbabweans.
