President Mugabe is expected to deliver a State of the Nation address in Parliament next Tuesday where he will touch on various issues affecting the country. Senate President Cde Edna Madzongwe made the announcement yesterday in the Upper House. “I have to inform the Senate that His Excellency, the President will address a joint session of Parliament on the State of the nation in the National Assembly chamber on Tuesday August 25 at 1500hours,” she said. “All Honourable Senators are expected to attend.”
The state of the economy, which is changing for the better following Government efforts in various fields, is one of the key issue President Mugabe is expected to address legislators on.
He may also speak on the recent dismissal of workers by companies spawned by the Supreme Court judgment involving Zuva Petroleum and its two employees.
Labour movements have estimated that more than 20 000 jobs have been lost in the last months owing to the wave of dismissals triggered by the court ruling.
Parliament has since passed the Labour Amendment Bill that seeks to stop the arbitrary dismissal of workers by firms from both the public and private sector.
The Bill awaits President Mugabe’s accent for it to become law.
