ALL is set for the inaugural CBZ Schools Debate taking place this afternoon at the Rainbow Hotel in Bulawayo.
The debate, being hosted by the Institute of African Knowledge in partnership with the National Association of Primary Heads, is sponsored by CBZ Holdings and will see the winning school receiving a whooping $50 000 prize package. Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Professor Paul Mavhima, will be the guest of honour at the event.
National co-ordinator for the debate, Isheanesu Sibanda, said 10 schools drawn from the country’s provinces will battle for supremacy. Bulawayo will be represented by Mabhukudwana Primary School from Nkulumane suburb while Welton Primary School will represent Matabeleland South province. Mutasa primary will be gunning for Harare province with Murehwa Central Primary School representing Mashonaland East. The other schools are Lady Tait (Mashonaland West), Bindura Primary (Mashonaland Central), Victoria Junior (Masvingo), St Joseph Makoni (Manicaland), Lingfield Primary School (Midlands) and Emhlangeni Primary School (Matabeleland North).
“The stage is set for the inaugural CBZ Schools Debate Championship which offers the biggest prize money of $50 000 in schools co-curricular activities.
The provincial and national winners will share the money and receive trophies from our chief sponsor, CBZ Holdings,” he said.
Sibanda said the debate is meant to help mould future leaders while also bringing vibrancy to the education sector.
“The CBZ Schools Debate championship is aimed at developing critical thinking, reading and research as well as active listening among the debaters, providing experiences that will raise cognitive and presentation skills to our primary pupils,” Sibanda said.
He urged parents and school heads to encourage children to participate in such debate programmes in order for them to gain deeper understanding of global issues.
