The event, which will run under the theme, ‘A Fresh and United Beginning’ will see coaches, referees and players being rewarded for their efforts.
Brighton Navaya, Shinga Magede and Exile Kapita will battle it out for the Referee of the Year award while veteran coach Ngoni Mukukula of Raiderz will be vying for the Coach of the Year award alongside Webster Mangwende of Glenview Pistons and Peter Mubanda of Mbare Heat.
The Most Valuable Player award has been divided into two categories – men and women.
The men’s category will feature Eric Banda and Tawanda Chitsinde and Simbarashe Mungomezi of Heat while the women’s section will be a showdown for JBC’s Sharon Chamwarura and the Varsity Leopards duo of Lucia Marisamhuka and Regina Chisale.
Tatenda Masarure, Simbarashe Chitsungwe and Mungomezi will be vying for the Players’ Player of the Year award in the men’s category.
The winners in each category will get gold medals while the runner-ups will walk away with a silver medal and those in third place will get bronze.
HBA spokesperson, Carlos Munda, said they were hoping for a new start to bring the basketball family together.
“The game had gone into doldrums, there was a lot of finger pointing but now we are saying let’s start afresh because at the end of the day it is basketball that suffers not individuals.
“For the benefit of the game we are saying let’s unite all basketball stakeholders. Sport is bigger than individuals. Those who do not have time for the game should leave the game for people who have time to run the game. They should not personalise the sport, everyone should come on board and bring in fresh ideas,” said Munda.
