MENTAL health activist, Wayne Mudzeru, has called for men to prioritise their mental well-being.
This is in line with Men’s Mental Health Awareness month which seeks to conscientise men about mental health and offer psycho-social support for those who need it.
Mudzeru said most mental health problems in men have been caused by societal expectations which have made them shun discussing their issues.
“Most men suffer because they are expected to maintain their dignity all the time.
“This has resulted in most men dying of depression or exhibiting violent behaviour and resorting to substance abuse.
“They are afraid of being labelled as weak by society hence they shun to even visit mental health clinics.
“Stereotypes about mental health have also hindered the addressing of this challenge as many view it as a white man’s disease.
“Lack of resources has also caused many grassroots organisations, which help when it comes to addressing mental health issues, failing to reach as many people as possible and this needs to be addressed,” said Mudzeru.
