RENOWNED Naturopathist and Psychotherapist, Professor Nathaniel KudakwaMwari, has conducted extensive research on the use of African Traditional Medicine (ATM) in treatment of individuals who have slipped into addiction and are abusing drugs and substances.

Prof KudakwaMwari is a PHD holder in psychological support and counselling.

It’s a significant breakthrough and the study reveals that integrating ATM with conventional approaches can provide a comprehensive treatment plan for individuals with addiction.

“Substance abuse is a growing concern globally, with millions of people affected. Conventional treatment approaches, such as medication-assisted therapy and behavioural counselling, have shown limited success in addressing the complex needs of individuals with addiction.

“ATM, with its holistic approach to health and wellness, offers a promising complementary approach to conventional treatment.

“I was fascinated by the wealth of knowledge and experience that traditional healers in Zimbabwe possess.

“Their approaches to treating addiction are holistic, taking into account the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of the individual.

“I was determined to learn from them and integrate their approaches into conventional treatment,” he said.

Prof KudakwaMwari’s research is rooted in his personal experience and consultation with traditional healers around Zimbabwe.

Over a period of more than 10 years, he travelled extensively throughout Zimbabwe, consulting with traditional healers and learning about their approaches to treating addiction.

“Traditional medicine is an integral part of Zimbabwean culture and has been used for centuries to treat various health conditions.

“By integrating traditional medicine with conventional approaches, we can provide a comprehensive treatment plan that addresses the complex needs of individuals with addiction.”

Prof KudakwaMwari’s research has important implications for the development of comprehensive treatment programmes that address the complex needs of individuals with addiction.

“We need to move beyond conventional treatment approaches and embrace the wealth of knowledge and experience that traditional healers possess.

“By integrating African Traditional Medicine with conventional approaches, we can provide a holistic treatment plan that addresses the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of addiction.”

His unique blend of expertise in traditional medicine, psychotherapy, and counselling makes him an authority in the field of substance abuse treatment.
