ZIMBABWE’S hip-hop artist Shone was part of history on Sunday night as British rock group Coldplay staged its biggest show in history, and the biggest musical show in India, with a record-breaking 134 000 fans converging at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
It was the final show of the Indian leg of Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres World Tour, which had five shows with the first three being held in Mumbai and the final two in Ahmedabad.
Shone was part of the supporting acts in all the five shows and his performances, which captured the imagination of the huge crowds, have been praised by many observers.
“U can’t believe that last year on this day that’s when I posted our first song to be in the top 10 chats in Zimbabwe #Nenza and people just started calling me Nzenza,” Shone posted on his social media platforms ahead of his final show in India on Sunday.
“Now, a year later, I’m opening for one of the biggest rock bands in the world Coldplay. Thank you so much Zimbabwe.”
There were 134 000 fans at the tour’s final show, the biggest number of fans to attend a Coldplay show, and the biggest number of fans to attend a live musical concert in India.
“We are so happy to be here, so grateful to be here. We know how lucky we are to play in your beautiful country, especially on a day when all the planets are aligned, and we have the best audience in the best stadium in the whole wide world,” Coldplay’s lead singer, Chris Martin, told the Ahmedabad crowd.
“Thank you for letting us feel what it’s like to be an Indian. We had the best time and we are going to miss you. I hope we come back soon and hope to see you again.”
Before the Ahmedabad super gig, the record attendance at a Coldplay show was the 83 000 people who paid to watch the group in Sydney in November last year.
Until now, singers Diljit Dosanjh and Justin Bieber held the record of the biggest number of fans to attend a musical show in India after 50 000 fans paid to watch their concerts.
Italian musician Vasco Rossi holds the world record after 225 000 fans paid to watch him in concert in Modena Park, Italy, in 2017.
Legendary British rock star Rod Stewart has the record for the biggest attendance, at an outdoor concert, when 3.5 million fans watched his concert in concert in Rio de Janeiro in 1994. However, unlike the concerts held by Coldplay and Rossi, the Rod Stewart concert was a free show.
