THE Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development Professor Jonathan Moyo, has castigated some authorities for corruptly securing places for their relatives who do not qualify to be enrolled at tertiary institutions.
Addressing 1 377 graduates and delegates at the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Polytechnic’s 40th graduation ceremony yesterday, Prof Moyo said the sad news come at a time when the Government was seized with a fight to eradicate corruption in the country.
He said some higher authorities use their influence to secure places at tertiary institutions for their under qualified relatives at the expense of deserving candidates
Prof Moyo reiterated that his ministry has positioned itself to promote colleges to offer degree programmes.
“Diplomas have become a study which further demands more support through degree programmes,” said the Minister.
Turning to STEM, Prof Moyo said the programme was bearing fruits.
“It has been a productive plan to establish STEM studies in the tertiary institutions. For this graduation we have so many people who excelled in their studies and I believe it’s more of sending out the productive and innovative products to the world. I hope these are going to create employment for themselves,” said Prof Moyo.
“JMN Poly being an institution that scooped some awards of special recognition in the past occasions this marks the productivity and initiative drive of STEM- related studies.”
The Government launched STEM last year in an effort to stimulate economic recovery through the use of sciences and technology.
The Government, through Zimdef, is paying fees for thousands of students who took up STEM subjects at A-Level .
