adminwhich will be out soon, touches on a number of social issues, an area that Chipfumo has skillfully mastered, judging by themes from his previous four albums.
In a telephone interview, Chipfumo said the album was behind schedule.
“I was supposed to release the album a few months ago but the whole project was derailed after I fell sick. But we are currently in the studio right now.
“It will be difficult to tell how long the project will take but it will be out soon once we are through,” said Chipfumo.
Since his return to live shows, Chipfumo has teamed up with sungura ace Alick Macheso, where the duo has been holding shows across the country.
Already, the two have held a number of shows together in Harare and this Friday, Macheso and Chipfumo are expected to hold yet another show at Pamuzinda Highway Xscape.
“Some of the gospel tracks on the album that I am working on have been on the trial run at several shows that I have been holding in the last few weeks.
“The feedback that I have been getting has been helping me in fine-tuning my work and I am hoping that this Friday, I will get the same response when I team up with Mukoma Alick at Pamuzinda,” he said.
Wielding his hardcore attitude and creativity skills, Chipfumo is undoubtedly one of the best guitarists that Zimbabwe currently has.
From the time he released his debut album, “Progress Report”, after leaving the Portia Gwanzura-led Hohodza Band, he has continued to rise steadily.
Three other equally good albums followed after “Progress Report”, earning himself a place among some of the country’s renowned musicians.
It was actually his fourth album, “Tsiurika”, which clearly showed that Chipfumo was indeed a talented guitarist and composer, whose lyrics were didactic while at the same time pointing out social ills that continue to haunt the nation.
While it has taken Chipfumo longer than necessary to enjoy the fruits of his sweat by playing at corporate functions, holding regional and international shows, the dream is close to being realised, judging by the respect he now commands from other artistes and fans.
What he probably now needs is a good manager to hold his hand, as he makes his way to the top.
