Project almost complete

intervention by the World Bank in response to the cholera epidemic that swept across Zimbabwe between 2007 and 2008.
Beitbridge town needs at least 15 000 cubic metres of water per day.
Engineers have completed repairing dam number one which could not store water because of several leakages. There are two dams supplying the Zinwa water treatment plant in Beitbridge.
Speaking during a Participatory Health and Hygiene workshop held in Beitbridge yesterday, the town’s environmental health officer Mr Pio Muchena said the programme has three phases.
The phases include the water supply upgrading, sewer rehabilitation and solid waste management and institutional strengthening.
It would also include residents on hygiene and environmental management issues.
“The major thrust of the project is to rehabilitate the existing facilities with regards to water sanitation, sewer reticulation, capacity building in terms of waste management. You will note that we have improved a lot in terms of water supply and the sewer reticulation systems.”
He said the council was implementing the final phase of the programme with the main objective of involving the community through capacity building and training programmes.
