SOCIETY must shun the discrimination of children with disabilities as this leaves them marginalised but embrace them to foster inclusivity and their development, a local charity organisation has said.
Dangamvura-based Everyone’s Child Charities Trust recently hosted an end of year party for children with disabilities at Dangamvura Beit Hall where beneficiaries received food hampers donated by retail giant Pick’n’Pay’s Mutare branches.
Speaking on the sidelines of the event, the organisation’s director Ms Nyasha Mubaiwa said looking after children with disabilities is society’s shared responsibility.
She called for the safeguarding of their rights to life, as well as accessing healthcare and education.
“Most children with disabilities face challenges like enrolling at schools and fitting in other public spaces owing to their different conditions and as society we have to come up with ways of addressing this situation and assisting them.
“This calls for collaborative efforts among stakeholders to provide special schools with the required facilities to cater for children with disabilities. Centres such as Nzeve Deaf Centre and Chengetai are also needed in Dangamvura.
“There is also need for recreational facilities in our communities that are user-friendly to children with disabilities. We can all join hands into a formidable force to achieve that end and hosting this end of year party is a step in that direction,” said Ms Mubaiwa.
She thanked Pick’n’Pay for the donation and implored other well-wishers to emulate the kind gesture.
Ms Mubaiwa called for the inclusion of disability issues in all policies and plans at local and national level.
