PEOPLE have welcomed the proposed 15-year minimum rape sentence, which is set to be gazetted next year.
The 15-year rape sentence is part of four amendments to the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Amendment Bill set to be debated in Parliament in 2023
In a snap survey by H-Metro, people welcomed the move saying it was long overdue.
Some said the proposed sentence would help protect young girls and women.
Takawira Mawoyo said there was a need to end rape.
“We welcome the development because women have for long been abused by men. The new sentence will act as a deterrent in the long run.
“Men who abuse women have been getting away with it because of the light sentences they were receiving. But a stiff penalty will go a long way in reducing rape cases,” he said.
Shingai Chigwaza also welcomed the development saying a strong message should be sent to would-be offenders.
“This is a good thing because men have been committing rape knowing that they won’t stay long in jail.
“For the sake of the girl child, this is good news for them because we are currently reeling from child rape,” she said.
However, another resident raised concern, saying some women may cry rape just to punish some men.
“This is a good thing, but as men, we are a bit worried that some women are going to use this as a tool against us to settle scores.
“I also feel sorry for innocent victims who are likely to be put away for a long for a crime they would not have committed,” said the man.
