ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) involves the simulation of human cognitive processes by machines, particularly computer systems.

Common applications include expert systems, natural language processing, speech recognition and machine vision.

AI systems operate based on programmed instructions and learnt patterns from large datasets. They can adapt their responses through feedback, but they lack consciousness and independent decision-making abilities.

AI is increasingly integrated into various sectors, including healthcare, where it aids in medical diagnosis and treatment planning.

In transportation, it is used in the development of autonomous vehicles like Tesla’s Autopilot, which is aimed at reducing accidents and traffic congestion.

For everyday applications, AI powers features like autocorrect and personalised content recommendations.

Recent advancements, particularly in deep learning and neural networks, have significantly improved AI’s accuracy and speed.

However, the rapid development of AI raises important ethical and societal questions.

Concerns exist over the potential impact of AI on job displacement. There are also issues pertaining to the collection and use of vast datasets as this raises concerns about privacy and security.

Similarly, there are concerns about the possibility of AI being used for malicious purposes, such as spreading misinformation.

The potential for AI to exhibit unexpected or concerning behaviours has been highlighted, with several examples cited.

While AI offers numerous potential benefits, it is crucial to address the associated risks and ensure responsible development and deployment.

It is necessary to understand the limitations and potential of AI to prevent possible negative outcomes.
