A MUTARE magistrate recently granted a protection order to a woman who accused her husband of physically and emotionally abusing her.
Charmaine Gorekore testified that her husband, Newton Muhlamba was abusive, and in February, he damaged some of the stock in her tuck-shop.
“He came to my tuck-shop in February, threatening to destroy it. He damaged some of the stock. He also sends me insulting messages, and assaults me whenever he wants. In December 2024, he left me and moved out. He later returned apologising for his actions,” said Gorekore.
Muhlamba, however, disputed the allegations.
He said issues in their marriage began when he discovered love texts in Charmaine’s cellphone after she started attending school.
He claimed that he had tried to address the issue with her relatives, but no one seemed to care.
“We have been married for 10 years, and I never had a problem with my wife. It started after she started going to school. I found some love text messages in her phone. I decided to take a break after she refused to go to Musasa for counselling. I tried to engage her and her relatives, but no one seemed to care,” he said.
Despite Muhlamba’s claims, Mutare magistrate, Ms Purity Gumbo, emphasised the need for the couple to stay together in peace, noting that they still shared the same roof.
However, she granted the protection order, citing the need to protect Gorekore from further abuse.
“The protection order is granted for Gorekore’s safety and well-being. It is necessary that both parties respect each other and work towards a peaceful resolution,” she ruled.
